Fitness trail plans approved BY GRACE CABELL

Concept plans for a fitness trail at Burnside Park have been approved. Last year the city council proposed a $69,000 fitness park trail at Burnside Park. At the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board meeting last week, the concept plans were approved. The trail would include four separate stations situated around the edges of the park. The city council held a consultation period between November

7-21, where 41 submissions were received. Results showed 83 per cent of respondents were in support of the plan, 12 per cent did not support it and five per cent of respondents gave no response. But the trail would only go ahead if funding was provided by the community for three of the four stations. Fitness Station 1 will be installed by the end of this year. The Commodore Hotel had provided the $10,000 of funding for this station.

It will include a sit-up bench, push-up bars, stretching rail installed on asphalt. Fitness stations two, three and four will all be installed by the end of 2017 if funding is provided. Fitness Station 2 will include a vertical ladder, stepper, chin up bars installed on bark soft fall. Fitness Station 3 will be a longterm project and does not yet have a final installation date. It will include two workout stations with three items of fitness equipment on each.

These include a shoulder wheel, cross trainer, pull down exerciser, recumbent cycle, skier and leg press installed on asphalt. Fitness Station 4 will include parallel bars, monkey bars and balance beam installed on bark soft fall. Community board chairwoman Val Carter said further investigations on funding were still needed for the stations to be installed. “We have got a sponsor for station one and then after that we will have to do a bit of funding,” she said. •Illustrations, page 3

areas of concern. Chairman David Hawke said it was a start towards reducing the isolation of suburbs on the southern side of the road. He said the board was very happy the pedestrian refuge was going in. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora said the board was “very pleased” the changes were under way. He said the changes would make crossing the road a lot safer for pedestrians. “There’s people from Country Palms that need to get their children across the road to school.”

A pedestrian refuge is being constructed on a Halswell road to make it safer for crossing. The refuge is being installed on Halswell Junction Rd near Country Palms Drive. The installation comes after the Halswell Residents’ Association voiced concerns about the lack of pedestrian accessibility in the area last month. The association was worried the issue would make roads in the area unsafe for pedestrians with Halswell Junction Rd, Nicholls Rd and State Highway 75 being

Progress has been made on repairing the heritage buildings in the Halswell Quarry. All three heritage buildings on the site have been closed since the earthquakes and are part of the Facilities Rebuild Programme as heritage facilities. City council community facilities rebuild unit manager Darren Moses said the council was currently in the final stages of design for the repair and strengthening of the old stone manager’s house. A fire report was also under way, he said. The next stage will be resource and building consent applications and once these are issued, construction can begin. Its expected completion date is expected to be June next year. The singlemens’ quarters building design is under way to repair the earthquake damage and strengthen the building. Resource and building consent applications are the next step and construction can begin once those are granted. At this stage it is expected to be completed by April 2016. Mr Moses said options to repair and strengthen the crusher building, along with general maintenance work are currently being investigated. The building requires a significant level of non-earthquake related maintenance and the funding for this additional work also needs to be sourced and approved. Halswell Residents’ Association secretary David Hawke said it was great news there was progress on repairing the buildings. “It’s part of getting back to normal really.” He said the Halswell Quarry Park was one of the most used facilities in the area and the repairs and re-opening of the historic buildings would add to that.

St Albans but we lost our place there, it was flooded three times from the February 2011 earthquake. Just prior to the earthquake we had 13 penguins in our care. When the earthquake hit we only had one penguin and I raced back home and just managed to scoop it out of the silt the poor wee thing. The new place in Sockburn was a good chance to incorporate a wee penguin area, we have native plants and artificial rocks. Once they are healthy they can live outside. We bought the section just after the earthquake and later built a new house so we thought of the penguins when we did it. We moved in in November 2013. Did you ever consider stopping the rehabilitation after the earthquake?

So Thomas can you tell me a bit about what you do? We have been doing the penguin thing since late 2010. It was a coincidence because we did a Civil Defence course and one tutor was looking after wildlife and she was looking for people to help. Somehow we got the name Jackie Stevenson, she did all the birds and I think she was a bit overwhelmed. I think she was happy we could at least take the penguins. Penguins are quite labour intensive, there is quite a lot of cleaning and washing. We needed to get a permit from the Department of Conservation. How do the penguins come to you? We get them directly from DoC rangers or directly from the public. Often people might be taking their dog for a walk and come across an injured penguin and then come home and Google us. And do you do this work from your home? It is our home. We started in

penguin and patient care When a bird is dehydrated we start feeding them a fish smoothie which is yum and we put it through a feeding tube and once their digestive system is working again they can have a whole fish. It is usually anchovies for the little ones and the bigger penguins like the yellow-eyed penguins get sardines. And what happens once they get their health back? We release the little blue penguins in Harris Bay, there is a colony of them near Taylors Mistake. They are flipper banded and go back there. The bigger ones are released in Flea Bay. How long do the penguins usually stay in your care? The longest we had stay was 80 days but usually we have the penguins for around three weeks plus or minus. We usually have anywhere between 10 to 45 birds here over a season. The most we have had was 13 penguins in our backyard at once. Inside is the intensive

ON THE MEND: Some of the penguins the couple has rehabilitated before releasing them back into the wild. care unit and we have them in our master bathroom, because we have our own en suite, and we have a dedicated area in our garage and once they are healthy enough they can move outside. Do you have any favourite breeds that come in? I think the Fiordland crested penguin is the most characteristic, they have the most character. One we had last year would trumpet when we came out with the fish, and we usually have to try and force feed the birds initially, but from the first day that bird was hand fed. We had a yellow-eyed penguin chick called Fluffy who had its foot entangled in plant material on Banks Peninsula. The mother initially looked after it but gave up and left. If DoC didn’t take it in it would have died. It came in at 1.7g, they say anything less than 2kg is a death sentence. We had it

for 80 days and we really bonded. Do you often name the penguins that you care for? We do name them, the most crucial time is the first 24-48 hours when they come in, if the bird survives that time usually the odds are good. Most of the birds that die will be within 24 hours. So we decided to name them once they make it through that time. We usually name them after the people that bring them in. So you said you lived in Germany, when did you move to New Zealand? We are both from Germany, we came here in 2002 initially to have an overseas work experience but then we liked the lifestyle. Now we are permanent residents. And are you partners? Yes, we met in the late 80s, early 90s we met at a special training in intensive care nursing and have

been together ever since. Kristina is from Hamburg and I was born in Cologne. Did you ever expect when you moved here that you would be doing this? We were hoping for it, but never thought it would happen. In 2001 there was a huge oil spill in South Africa. There were about 20,000 penguins affected, it was a huge disaster so we went to help. One of our friends had 300 penguin chicks in their backyard and we had to clean the penguins and care for them before they were relocated to the east coast of South Africa. We realised that having penguins in your backyard was quite nice. What do you feed them? The weak ones start with a fish smoothie four times a day and they get to eat a whole fish when they are strong enough. After a

couple of days they start hard feeding. We get the fish from United Fisheries and now we also get them from a salmon hatchery in Kaiapoi. What are the most common reasons for them being brought in? A lot of them have bite wounds, you can’t really tell what they are from but most of them are from barracudas. Yellow-eyed penguins can often get attacked by sharks and manage to get away. One had a propeller wound. Lots of the little blues are starving or don’t cope once they are fledged so they end up having to look after themselves and are brought in here. Is it a full-time job? Yes, there’s a lot of cleaning and we have to move cages, washing and sorting fish. Usually once they have had their last feed at eight-ish it is quiet for the night, it’s only when we have the small birds that need more attention. I work as a night nurse and during the penguin season we try to get opposite shifts so someone is always with the penguins. I still go to the gym two times a week and I used to play tennis in St Albans but I haven’t found a club here yet. Kristina is doing yoga but it’s nice to just lie down. Do you know when they will be brought in? It can come any time, sometimes I can come home from a night shift and we are getting one. We are on call all the time.

Fertility questions? New Year, New Baby Take the first step...

– Some Advice from Dr Sarah Wakeman MBChB, FRANZCOG, CREI Medical Director Fertility Associates Christchurch

The New Year and holiday break is often a time to contemplate what is important and make plans to get started on things we have been putting off. As a result we often see women in the early months of the year having decided ‘this is the year for a baby – let’s make it happen’. The Biological Clock is the most important factor when having a baby. The online Biological Clock biological clock at fertilityassociates.co.nz. or App can tell you how long to try naturally, before seeking help. For example if you are 39 years old you should consider seeking help after 5 months, and should definitely be seeking advice after 1 year. Every month counts when you are getting into your late 30s. The Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) blood testing to estimate Ovarian Reserve can help identify who may experience early menopause. If you have other conditions such as Polycystic Ovaries or Endometriosis it is also recommended you seek advice early to understand their potential impact on your chances. It’s important for the male to be tested too. Of the couples we see, approximately 50% are experiencing fertility issues that stem from the male – so if it is taking longer than you think it should, don’t leave him at home. Not met Mr Right? You do have options too, and you could benefit from talking through your options with one of our Fertility Associates CREI qualified Fertility Specialists. All 629 pupils received a bottle with a personalised name printed on each. Deputy principal Karen Wheeler said the school was grateful for the drink bottles. “It has given us an opportunity to inform the students about the benefits of drinking water and keeping hydrated. “Now the students have their own named drink bottle this risk is reduced. They also think that having a drink bottle with their name on it is pretty cool.” Principal Richard Edmundson and KidsCan chief executive and founder Julie Chapman were on hand to talk about problems with a lack of hydration and general health issues. Sharing drink bottles in school is common and increases the risk of spreading germs and infection. Strep throat, cold sores and the common cold are the most commonly spread through the sharing of drink bottles, with meningitis being another risk. Meridian Energy has already donated over 2800 bottles to schools throughout Christchurch where families are still experiencing extreme pressure since the earthquakes. A further 2266 bottles will be dis-

On the hunt for graffiti BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

Community watch patrols have been helping the city council map graffiti in Riccarton, Addington, Sydenham, Spreydon and Hornby. The aim is to record where graffiti is so the city council can have it cleaned off, and to have a record of where taggers are operating. The mapping of graffiti is an annual event but this year is the first time community watch patrols have been involved. Riccarton Community Watch members were out covering Riccarton, Addington, Sydenham and Spreydon while the Hornby Community Patrol was covering Hornby. The data is now being tallied and results will come out next month. Riccarton Community Watch co-ordinator Geoff Parfitt said the watch was out pinpointing any graffiti spotted from the car. There were three people on each patrol, one person driving, while the passengers were on the look out. The passengers marked out on a map the exact spot graffiti was found and the data was then to be forwarded to the city council graffiti team. “It’s doing a good thing for the community,” Mr Parfitt said. He said in doing so, the watch hoped to deter more people from tagging as they would see the marked car.

TAGGERS BEWARE: Riccarton Community Watch co-ordinator Geoff Parfitt says the graffiti scan was a good thing for the community. Mr Parfitt said previously graffiti had been most common on main streets because the perpetrator wanted their tag to be seen. He said graffiti was not the watch’s problem, but the community was, and tags affected those people. Mr Parfitt said Riccarton had been a quiet area for graffiti of late

with a count at the end of last year showing lower numbers. “We did not report that much to the city council because there was nothing to report.” He said Riccarton Rd used to be a hot-spot for graffiti, often seeing 50 or 60 tags. “Now you are lucky to see any.” He was not sure why that was but

Monday March 9 2015

believed taggers seeing marked patrol cars could have been a deterrent. Hornby Community Patrol chairwoman Bev Birrell said the patrol was very happy to assist the city council with the scan. “It is cleaning up the city.” She said five patrollers took part in the scan and they finished in two days and it had been very effective. “My area around Broomfield used to be real bad and my fence used to get tagged all the time, but since the graffiti project came in there’s nothing on it.” A city council spokeswoman said various Christchurch community patrols were completing the council graffiti programme’s fifth annual graffiti scan. She said it was an environmental scan where each item of graffiti, which can be viewed from the street, is counted in selected suburbs. It was completed on the same week each year so it can be used to track graffiti trends. This year it was decided to utilise the community patrols who are active volunteers with the volunteer based graffiti vandalism removal programme Off the Wall. “The community patrols regularly report graffiti to the team as part of their regular patrols.” Other community patrols involved were Burwood Pegasus, City to Sumner and Crime Watch.

Three clubs combine to build new rooms

Three Riccarton sports clubs are teaming up to build new clubrooms. The Riccarton Domain Tennis Club, Riccarton Cricket Club and Avon United FC have prepared a preliminary plan of the clubrooms which would replace the existing football rooms. Tennis club president Bryan Clarke said in this day and age, clubs were more effective if they worked together. “All three clubs are committed to working together, it’s the only way to effectively do things these days.” He said the football club had an architect draw up original plans to gauge reaction from club members. The tennis club has the plans on its website and Facebook page to get feedback from its members. Mr Clarke said the plans were a preliminary draft and had received good reviews. He said they were a raw draft to gauge reaction and get feedback to move forward and there was a lot of work to be done yet. He said the city council was very pleased the three clubs had decided to work together.

Have your Culture say on on display centre at festival The city council wants to hear from residents about a proposal to rebuild a new Bishopdale Community Centre and Library on the site of the former Bishopdale Creche building in Farrington Ave. A new facility will replace the closed Bishopdale Community Centre and Library in Bishopdale Mall, which has been deemed uneconomic to repair. It is proposed an 800 sq m single-storey facility housing a library, large dance hall and meeting rooms is built on the former creche site. A joint working group set up to have input into the development of a replacement Bishopdale Community Centre and Library unanimously agreed that the former creche site was its preferred site for the new facility on February 24. This followed a recommendation from council staff charged with evaluating a number of site options. The JWG considered five site options including the former Bishopdale Community Centre and Library site in Bishopdale Mall, which was too small to house an 800 sq m facility. The city council has set up a dedicated email address BishopdaleCommunityFacility@ccc. govt.nz<mailto:BishopdaleCom munityFacility@ccc.govt.nz> for people to provide feedback. Residents are encouraged to provide feedback by 5pm on March 22.

Take care if working near live wires BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER They tell you that when painting your house you should get the overhead power disconnected before you wield a paint brush around house connections. Well the same seems to go for water blasting as a homeowner in Cashmere Rd found out last Friday. The jet from the water blaster touched the live wires causing them

to arc and short. I suppose he has to consider himself lucky that the arc didn’t find the shortest route to earth. That would have been through him. No fire, but the Addington crew attended and waited for the lines expert to arrive and disconnect. A lesson to us all perhaps. Not many weeks pass when we don’t have an animal rescue of some sort. Normally where horses are involved I seem to be

talking about St Albans crews who are often called to semi-rural properties for these incidents. For a change this week – Sockburn’s crew attended the Canterbury Agricultural Park to free a horse stuck in dirt. A big, heavy, strong animal frustrated and distressed needs to be handled carefully. This time the horse was freed without drama by the red watch team from Sockburn.

There has been a seasonal upsurge recently in cars being stolen and set alight. Sometimes, as in Halswell last Sunday night, not just the car involved. In this case, grass and scrub ignited from the burning vehicle caused quite a big vegetation fire that took four and a half hours to fully extinguish. Keep cars locked, garaged if possible. Make it hard for the ratbags.

Catch-22 over 30min car parking BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

All day parking in Sydenham could dry up if businesses keep applying to have restrictions installed outside their premises. Realcold and BBQs Direct are the latest businesses in the area to have P30 restrictions approved. Last month, P30 restrictions were approved outside the premises of Trents Wholesale in Orbell St. Sydenham Quarter Incorporated secretary Lorraine Thompson said parking was bound to dry up if restrictions continued to be installed. “It has got to. “It’s hard enough now for clients, even going into cafes, half an hour isn’t enough time.” She said parking in the area had been an issue before the earthquakes but it had been made more difficult since. “If you are working in the area, you’ve got to be able to get into

work. “It’s a catch-22, because you need customers, but you need staff to be able to get in as well.” She said it was the people on Colombo St who had the issue because there were fewer buildings with off-site parking for employees. However, Cass St was always difficult to find parking because people working in town would often park there and walk the short distance to work, she said. She said there was currently one place in the area that people could book and pay for a car park and that was behind Angus Donaldson Copy Service. Realcold branch manager Barry Woolford said parking had been a big issue for customers. He said there had been a lot of comments from customers saying if parking was more accessible they would come back to shop there more often. There would still be unrestricted

parking was an issue in the area. “I think it is all around this area.” A lot of customers had said they had difficulty finding parks. “We get it all the time.” She often sat in her car for 45min trying to find a park in the morning and had to leave home earlier just to get one. But city council road corridor operations manager Paul Burden said the council was not currently looking at any specific solutions around commuter parking in Sydenham. “Our focus is on providing shortterm parking for customers and visitors to the area to encourage economic vitality.” Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board chairman Paul McMahon said finding a park in Sydenham was quite difficult. The city council was working on improving other aspects, such as cycleways, to ensure people did not need to take their car, he said.

Push for change to new bus system Bishopdale residents are pushing for changes to the new bus system. Four new bus services were introduced across the city when Environment Canterbury changed 75 per cent of the Metro network in December last year. But bus users in the area say the changes have made using the bus more difficult and are asking for the routes to be reviewed. The Bishopdale Community Trust is collecting stories from affected users to send to ECan. “We hope this will get them to reconsider the changes that have been made and to look at some other options. We feel it is important that we keep on talking about the lack of buses in our area,” trust community development worker Tania Smith. Bishopdale resident Stephen Calvert said he was using the No 119 bus and the Comet, but now may be forced to buy a car. “Now I’m cycling to work, fine in the summer weather but I’m dreading the winter. We run one car which my wife uses for work. It seems a false economy to run a second car for me to get to work, but I’m considering it.”

ACTION: The Bishopdale Community Trust has put up posters on bus stops pushing for bus changes. These echo the notices Environment Canterbury posted on bus stops that were no longer in use, last year. (Photo taken on Raleigh St.) Another resident, Jean Benton had previously used the No 119 bus to get to her senior citizens’

club. The 82-year-old said now has to walk 12 minutes then take

the bus, then walk another 22 minutes to get there (one way). She said she is worried about the winter weather and how it will affect her getting to her group. Prior to the bus service changes last year, the community trust made 164 submissions to ECan during the consultation period in an attempt to stop the changes. “A lot of people are really worried about winter coming because they have to walk quite a distance to the bus. It’s affected people’s ability to socialise and we will see that even more in winter time. We know post-quake how important it is for people to be connected,” she said. ECan public transport manager David Stenhouse said the bus service would be reviewed in mid to late 2015. “Bishopdale is an area which has had a service removed due to low patronage, and so now customers in this area travel via the 125 to Northlands to connect with the Blue Line, rather than travelling direct to the city. We understand this is not ideal and we will review services in this area, including the Orbiter, in mid to late 2015.”

Get walking

Walk2Work Day this Wednesday (March 11) Increasingly, the health benefits of active commuting and using public transport are being recognised and are well researched.

T

his is a way to combat poor health and prevent a polluted environment. For every 1200 steps or 12 minutes of walking (about one kilometre) you burn calories, improve your health and happiness, and reduce your disease risk; 1300 steps save 72 cents on car costs and avoid 0.2 kilograms of carbon emission. People who commute by bus or train and ferry get on average over three times the exercise of those in a car. And bus and trains are the safest way to get around. The question is, if it’s so great why aren’t more people walking and using public transport? Living Streets president Andy Smith says, “Walking is part of every trip but we want people to walk more. We do see more people walk and use public transport in some places, but our cities have been

developed for the car. This makes it difficult to get the exercise we need everyday – recommended 30 minutes activity most days for adults, and more for children and teenagers. We think it should be easy to walk or use public transport to where you want to go everyday, save the car for out of the ordinary trips. We want to see the Government promote walking and public transport through events like Walk2Work Day, and make a fundamental change to more people-centred cities.” Living Streets Aotearoa started the annual walk day in 2009 to promote walking, its health benefits and its priority position in sustainable transport. This Wednesday, people nationwide are encouraged to give walking, or walking and taking public transport a go.

In Christchurch, organisers are putting on a special event at Hillmorton Hospital. There will be free breakfast treats, discounted coffee and spot prizes for the hospital staff. Check out your local council for details or search Walk2Work Day. Check out www.livingstreets.org.nz.

GRASSROOTS SPORT FANTASTIC FLY: Taiko Torepe-Ormsby of the Wharenui club swimming in the butterfly. He won three medals at the New Zealand junior championships held in Wellington recently. He won the gold medal in the 50m Butterfly in a time of 31.66 seconds which was a new Swimming Canterbury West Coast record which stood since 2007. He also won two more medals. A silver in the 100m butterfly and a bronze in the 50m backstroke.

Young players meet netball stars All eyes were on two young Canterbury netballers last week as they stood alongside some of New Zealand’s best at Horncastle Arena. Emily Methven, 10, of Avonhead got the opportunity to meet Anna Thompson and Maria Tutaia and high five the players as they ran on court after she won the ANZ Future Captains competition. She was joined by fellow winner Amy-Lee Baynon, 8, of Rangiora. For Emily, who attends Christ the King Catholic School, this was the first netball game she had gone to watch and she loved the atmosphere and experience. “Me and my brother and friends found it interesting because it was NEW LOCATION ADVERT.pdf a really close game and it’s much1 faster than the games I play.”

She plays goalshoot and wing attack for her school and Marist Albion Netball Club and says she wants to be in the Tactix one day. “I like playing with my friends and how your teammates encourage you and don’t let you down.” Amy-Lee, who attends Southbrook School in Rangiora said getting to high five the players was really fun. “I was really nervous before I went on court but I liked meeting the players. One gave me a fist pump, it was cool.” Amy-Lee has started her second year of Future Ferns for Ashley Netball Club and loves shooting goals. 1/05/2014 11:51:35 a.m. “When you get goals, and so do your other friends, you can say: ‘I

got a goal as well’, it’s really exciting.” ANZ head of sponsorship Susan McGregor said many young netballers dream to compete in the elite transtasman tournament and being a Future Captain gives them a taste of what it’s like. “We’re giving 62 children from across the country the chance to be a Future Captain at each of the ANZ Championship matches this season. It’s a once in a lifetime experience to stand out on court with the pros and hopefully it inspires a few players to keep training hard, it could definitely be one of them one day soon.” The match saw the Mystics beat the Tactix 59-53. •More sport, pages 18, 19

GRASSROOTS SPORT Hornets player signs up for NSW club Former Halswell Hornets and Canterbury Bulls player Toi Sepuloni has moved to Australia to play senior club footy. He was signed by the Cowra Magpies and arrived in the small town 300km west of Sydney two weeks ago. The 29-year-old played for the Canterbury Bulls in their national title win last year and the Magpies see him as filling a big hole left by two of their players leaving at the end of last season. This is only the second time Sepuloni has gone to Australia with the first time being when he played in a curtain-raiser to an NRL game as a schoolboy. He played at stand-off for Halswell and hoped to play in the same position for the Magpies. Their season starts in the second week of April with the Cowra Magpies travelling to Lithgow, 168km away to play the Workies. The Cowra Magpies lost the grand final of the Group 10 Premier League last year and Sepuloni is hoping he can take them one step further in 2015.

McNee and Ash Blewett with all three in a position to win. In the first race of the weekend the 20-year-old all but sealed the title with a win. He did have a degree of luck as his title rival Blewett suffered a puncture while he was leading the race. In the morning race on Sunday, Alexander again finished on the podium in second place tightening his grip on the championship. The final race of the weekend did not go all Alexander’s way as he had issues on the start line when

Former St Thomas’ student Tom Alexander won New Zealand’s Toyota 86 racing championship. He finished fourth in last year’s championships but took the big prize this year. He said he was over the moon to win the championship and it had taken four years of hard work to get to this point and it was really satisfying to win it all. Going into the three-race weekend Alexander was in a three-way battle to take the title with Jaime

he selected the wrong gear and was quickly overtaken by the field leaving him sixth after the first lap. He fought back though and ended up second behind McNee. The two then fought for the lead fiercely and even racing side-by-side into a corner and down a straight before they made contact and McNee went sliding off the track. Alexander was deemed to have caused the crash and was given a 30 second penalty which saw him finish in sixth but it did not matter as he had enough points to win the championship by 66 points over

McNee. Alexander is now looking at his options as to where he takes his career, the Toyota Racing Series is an option as well as looking at racing in Australia. The TRS is New Zealand’s premier single-seat racing series and is internationally recognised now, Alexander said that would be great option for him. He said funding is always the issue in motorsport and he would take some time over the next couple months to decide where to go next.

hen a friend recommended Jonathan Milne’s book Go! The Art of Change to Anne Bannock, she then looked into studying at The Learning Connexion, the school of art and creativity based in Wellington which Jonathan founded and directs. She realised that its study-from-home part-time option suited her down to a tee. “My lifelong ambition was to go to an art school and to be part of the creative energy that goes with it,” says Anne. “To enter a new world of understanding modern art and new ideas.” Situated in picturesque Ngatimoti, Anne has made a studio retreat that caters to her creativity and to the public. “My studio is

a converted cowshed which serves as my studio and gallery, and is open to the public in the summer.” The Advanced Diploma programme has been the best programme of study for Anne to follow, allowing her to discover new techniques and skills to add to her extensive creative repertoire. “Everyone I have met has been helpful, especially the tutors. I have met some students when I attended a block class and now I follow their progress via the magic of the workroom, TLC’s online student forum.” If you’d like to enquire about studying at The Learning Connexion School of Art and Creativity, call us on 0800 278 769, or email us at admissions@tlc.ac.nz.

GETING THE RIGHT

FIRST AID TRAINING

N

ot all first aid certificates are created equal. While first aid courses must achieve prescribed New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) standards to be certified, not all training providers deliver the same course. There can be big differences in first aid courses between a range of training providers. Some courses range from teaching only the basic NZQA specified content and nothing else, to providing detailed and comprehensive content designed to familiarise participants to a wide range of likely emergencies. Providers offering shortened courses or courses not meeting the NZQA training requirements are now in the spotlight. NZQA and the Department of Labour have published a factsheet to outline requirements for providers, learners and employers for first aid training based on currently registered NZQA unit standards. Below is a summary of what we think you should know. Course differences Training providers can market their courses under a wide range of names such as Essential First Aid, Workplace First Aid or Comprehensive First Aid and many other eye-catching titles. The term ‘workplace’ can vary from a small office to a large factory where the risks and potential injuries are just as wide. Employers should be cautious in thinking that a one-day workplace first aid course will meet their needs in industries such as construction, engineering, forestry and industrial. More advanced learning is important to meet the proper workplace

assessments and health and safety obligations. The content of courses can also vary. Employers should check to see the first aid course is relevant to their particular industry risks. If there are risks of falling, or medium to high injury, then a take careful look in the shortened courses as these subjects may not be covered. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees attend courses appropriate to their industry risks. Unit standard-based first aid training These are the minimum requirements for both the initial and refresher training. The minimum duration of first aid training and assessment will be based on: • Unit Standards 6400, 6401 (or 26552) and 6402 (or 26551), a minimum of 12 hours training and assessment • Unit Standards 6401 (or 26551) and 6402 (or 26552), a minimum of eight hours training and assessment • For refresher training, where the learner’s certificate is no older than two years and three months from date of issue, a minimum of six hours training and assessment First aid training must cover the outcomes of the NZQA first aid unit standards being assessed and any additional modules identified by the employer through the workplace risk assessment process as outlined in the Department of Labour guidelines. Only first aid training providers accredited by NZQA can award the credits and issue a first aid certificate. Care needs to be taken to ensure that the provider is actually registered with NZQA for this purpose. NZQA conducts regular external evaluative

reviews on all training providers. New Zealand Red Cross is proud to hold a double Highly Confident accreditation in both Educational Performance and Capability in Self-Assessment. This means that NZ Red Cross is a Category One training provider. First aid refresher training Refresher training is required every two years to maintain the certificates. This is a requirement and not something for the provider to decide. The requirement allows for a three-month period of grace, so the cut off period is two years and three months which should allow sufficient time to enrol onto a suitable course. The refresher training should ensure the certificate holder is current in first aid

practice appropriate to their individual workplace requirements. If a certificate is not renewed for more than three calendar months from the second anniversary date of issue, it will be necessary for the certificate holder to complete full first aid training to maintain currency. Parking at Ferrymead Park is limited this year because of soccer ground upgrades for the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The main parking and bus departure point to both starts is now from McCormacks Bay Reserve.

Before the event starts

Buses to both start locations will be running from McCormacks Bay Reserve. Park your car in the designated car parking area at McCormacks Bay Fields and catch the special Red Bus to either start location. Buses will be departing between 7:30am and 8:30am for the City2Surf 14km 9am start at Centennial Park, and between 8:30am and 9:30am for the 10am Heart Foundation 6km start at Hansen Park. The 6km start drop off point is on Opawa Road (near Ford Street) where it’s an 800m walk to the Hansen Park start. Please note: McCormacks Bay Road is one way so you must enter from the western end (Mt Pleasant). Exit is at the eastern end (Redcliffs).

After you’ve finished the event

A free shuttle will operate between Ferrymead Park (finish) and McCormacks Bay (parking area). Alternatively, if you parked near your starting point, after completing the event catch the special Red Bus from Ferrymead Park back to your start location. Buses will be departing between 10am and 2pm, so if you have to leave early or wish to relax and enjoy the entertainment and prize giving there is a bus to suit you. We suggest that pick-ups are arranged from Ferry Road – do not attempt to enter Bridle Path Road or Ferrymead Park Drive as it will be too congested.
